ABEM WalkTEM 2
ABEM Walktem geological near-surface tool
Applications include groundwater and mineral exploration and environmental investigations.
The Transient Electromagnetic (TEM) method
TEM offers good penetration of conductive overburden and is increasingly popular for hydrogeological purposes as well as general geological mapping and mineral exploration. Since there is no requirement for galvanic ground contact, data can be collected in high resistivity surficial zones and in areas covered by ice or exposed rock.
Advanced TEM made easy
ABEM WalkTEM is derived from the airborne SkyTEM helicopter system, sharing the technology. While SkyTEM covers large areas, ABEM WalkTEM offers more accurate resolution of fine details in geology. With a set of predesigned protocols, ABEM WalkTEM quickly switches between different tasks. A variety of transmitter loop sizes provides good scalability for the project at hand.
Data collection is complete in a few minutes
NEW BOOSTER OPTION
The ABEM TX-60 booster interacts with the ABEM WalkTEM system via a communication cable and the units are totally isolated from each other. Control power is supplied from an internal rechargeable battery and transmitter power is supplied from an external DC power source.
The ABEM TX-60 outputs a massive 60 Amperes, handles up to 250 V DC input voltage and is synchronized with the ABEM WalkTEM system during transmission.

System configuration
The ABEM WalkTEM system integrates a high current transmitter and a dual channel wide bandwidth receiver in one rugged box, which also contains an integrated PC and dual internal batteries. The system is complete with two models of low noise receiver coils; one optimized for high resolution shallow soundings and the other with a larger effective area, suitable for deeper soundings.
Dual moment measuring technique
Using dual moment transmission the ABEM WalkTEM automatically alternates between maximum and reduced current pulses, thus utilizing the benefits from both high energy fields as well as fast current pulse turn-off. The advantage is high resolution response from shallow to maximum depth. With its unique acquisition technology, ABEM WalkTEM accurately resolves a wider span of signals, covering both deep and more near-surface data in one go, greatly improving field survey efficiency.
Processing and visualization
Data processing into a layer model can be done directly on site, using the on-board ViewTEM software. Further processing and visualization can be done with ViewTEM PC version and Aarhus Workbench.
Connectivity
A wide range of connectivity, such as GPS, Ethernet and USB, is available, making it possible to take measurements without being close to the instrument, and for our support team to conduct upgrades, support and troubleshooting remotely.
Precise results from superior data quality
Every aspect of the ABEM WalkTEM 2 has been designed with a focus on optimizing data quality.
Clean, precise TEM data is measured seamlessly from shallow to deep thanks to Dual Moment measurements, broad dynamic range, robust ABS polymer housings and separate, yet compact, transmitters and receivers.

Remote connectivity
Operate, upgrade, download or test anywhere, at any time
Remote connectivity can allow the ABEM support team to assist with software upgrades, give support or troubleshoot if necessary. This unique feature ensures that the system is always up to date, operating correctly, with the risk of downtime kept to an absolute minimum.
The built-in field computer in the ABEM WalkTEM 2 offers robust computing power, an easy to use graphical user interface and connectivity such as USB, Ethernet and Wi-Fi. The internal GPS supports GLONASS, which improves positioning accuracy. Data is stored on a removable 16 GB microSD memory card, with a capacity of millions of data readings.
Advantages:
- Measure IP faster and with better quality
- Rugged and robust – measure anywhere at any time
- Remote connectivity allows assistance onsite
- Scaleable and easy to upgrade
- Optimized for productivity, minimizing field time
- Outstanding quality of data even in the harshest conditions
- GPS with GLONASS for improved accuracy

Rapid field survey procedures and analysis
With a focus on efficient operation, it is possible to map in minutes what could take hours or days with other geophysical technologies or drilling.
The ABEM WalkTEM 2 combines features such as the unique Dual Moment measurement mode with multiple receiver channels to enable collection of parallel data streams in a single measurement cycle. After data collection is finished the results can be modelled directly on the instrument so that quality assurance measures, and even an initial geological interpretation, can be done without need for a laptop or a return to the office.
